Cube Storage

The name “Mayfair” belongs with the phrase “cube storage unit.” Two pages of the Restoration Hardware Home catalogue testify to the veracity of that statement. Those pages display a Mayfair steamer cube, a cube with good sized drawers. The placement of the cube storage in each picture, underlines the versatility of this storage unit.

In one picture, the Mayfair cube serves as the end table for a sofa. In the second picture, a cube of the same shape and style has become a bedside table. While both cubes have the same style and shape, they have different color combinations. One cube has brown drawers; the other has silver plated drawers.

Now, the reader might wonder why a decorator would choose to place a steamer cube next to a bed. Why not use a nightstand that matches the material in the bed frame? Well, in this case, the pictured bed has a metal frame. The metal highlights on the Mayfair cube match with the metal in that frame.

Well, if a decorator puts a Mayfair cube next to a bed, then what sort of dresser should be used in that same bedroom? In this case, the decorator has chosen to use a Mayfair steamer double chest. Like the cube, this chest has drawers. However, unlike the cube, this chest has a rectangular shape.

A reader might also wonder why a decorator would want to use a steamer cube as an end table. Well, in this case, the Mayfair cube matches perfectly with the other items in this living area. On both sides of the sofa, one can see simple wood and metal shelves. In front of the sofa is a leather wrapped Mayfair steamer trunk. That trunk is meant to function as a coffee table.

So is the steamer cube the only cube shaped storage solution that can be found in the RH catalogue? No, it is not. On the page with the steamer piece and sofa combination, one can find a different sort of cube storage unit. It is a mailroom wood and metal tray.

This tray has been placed on top of the leather wrapped “coffee table.” This make shift coffee table happens to have some hidden drawer space. However, any loose items that have not yet been placed in a drawer can be collected in the mailroom tray. The wood and metal combination in the tray makes it the perfect element of added storage.
